Cut electricity usage by
25% for 2025
The 25 by 25 Challenge is a Kerry project that invites you to
save money on your electricity bill by reducing your energy consumption
in just a few easy steps.
What's your electricity consumption?
Start by looking at your electricity bill and checking the small print on the last page to find the total electricity used. In the bill below, this is 496kWh. We'll aim to get it down by 25% to 372kWh in our next bill.
Or aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 25%. In the bill below, this is 104gCO2/kWh. Our target is to get it down to 78gCO2/kWh in our next bill.
How do you reduce energy consumption?
These small changes will bring down your energy consumption and your bills.
- Identify the big users using a plug-in energy monitor (available at your local library) or by watching your electricity meter. Then use them less.
- When upgrading appliances, go for the best Energy rating possible within budget. Learn about Energy ratings here.
- Turn down the heating thermostat by 1 degree to save as much as 10%.
- Electrical appliances: Switch off and plug out.
- Cook efficiently.Turn off the hob/oven in the last few minutes of cooking when still hot.
- Cool efficiently. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible and do not overload. If a fridge or freezer is too full, cold air does't circulate around the food items and so it has to work harder.
